Classes, sections & subjects

Set up classes, sections, subjects and teacher mappings for the academic year.

A task-focused guide: follow the steps when you need to get something done.

The academic structure is configured in Academics Setup. Set up classes, sections, subjects and teacher mappings before using exams, marks entry and other academic workflows.

Classes and sections

  1. Open Academics Setup.
  2. Add each class, such as Class 7.
  3. Add the sections that belong to each class, such as Section A and Section B.
  4. Assign students to their class and section from People.

A section is optional when a class is taught as one group. When sections are used, many academic screens can target a specific section.

Subjects

  1. In Academics Setup, add each subject.
  2. Configure its code, full marks and pass marks.
  3. Assign the subject to the classes that study it.

A subject being available to a class is not the same thing as assigning a teacher to that subject.

Teacher mappings

Teacher mappings connect a teacher + subject + class, with an optional section. They determine which subjects a teacher is responsible for in the academic workflow.

Create mappings in Academics Setup → Mappings. Make sure the mapping exists before asking a teacher to enter marks.

:::important[Required for marks entry] A teacher must be mapped to the subject for the relevant class/section before that teacher can enter marks for it. A teacher account by itself is not enough, and assigning a subject to a class does not automatically assign it to a teacher. :::

If a teacher teaches the same subject to multiple classes or sections, create the corresponding mappings for each assignment.

The Academics view

Teachers see the classes and subjects assigned to them. Students see the academic information that applies to their own enrollment, including their routine and subjects.

Promoting students

Use Promote to move students from one academic year to another:

  1. Open Promote.
  2. Choose the source and target academic years.
  3. For each class, choose the destination class and a section strategy:
    • Keep sections — preserve the section names in the target class.
    • Map each section — choose a destination section for each source section.
    • Distribute serially — fill destination sections in order according to their capacity.
    • One section or No sections — use the corresponding destination structure when sections are not being preserved.
  4. Review the preview.
  5. Confirm the promotion.

Promotion changes the students’ academic placement while keeping their existing records associated with them.

Syllabus

The Syllabus module lets authorized teachers and managers upload files for a class or section:

  1. Open Syllabus.
  2. Choose the target class or section.
  3. Upload the syllabus file.

Students enrolled in the target class or section can access the files available to them.

Files

The Files screen gives administrators an overview of uploaded school files, such as admission documents and syllabus files.

For a new academic year, use this order:

  1. Create the academic year.
  2. Create classes and sections.
  3. Create subjects and assign them to classes.
  4. Add students and place them in classes/sections.
  5. Create teacher mappings for every teacher’s class/subject assignment.
  6. Build the routine and configure exams as needed.

The teacher mappings are especially important: marks entry depends on them.
